Touring Ilocos Without a Car Part 2: Going to Pagudpud

This is Part 2 of Touring Ilocos Without a Car series

Pagudpud lies on the north of Laoag. It’s pretty cold out there during the “ber” months pretty much like Baguio. From Laoag, it is a 2 hour bus ride. There are two good beaches in Pagudpud, one is Saud and the other is Blue Lagoon or what they call “Maira-ira“.

GOING TO PAGUDPUD

The airport is located in a town outside Laoag so when you leave the terminal, you will see some jeeps, tricycles and the Fort Ilocandia bus waiting at the parking lot. It’s up to you if you want to ride the jeep or the small tricycles (I mean really small compared to Manila trikes) going to Laoag since the fare is the same, Php40 – Php50 per head depending on how good you are at haggling.

Take the trike if you wanna go directly to your hotel. Take the jeep if you’re headed for the bus terminals at Laoag.

So after some haggling with the jeepney driver, we agreed to the Php 40 fare. If you’re accommodation is in Saud, buses going to Pagudpud will do, but if you’re staying at Kapuluan Vista Resort (like we did) which is nearer Blue Lagoon, ask the driver to drop you off the bus terminal with buses going to Cagayan or Claveria.

We took the St. Joseph bus, but there are other nicer buses out there. The fare for ordinary bus going to Pagupud is Php60 each. We didn’t mind riding an ordinary bus since the weather is already cool. Keep in mind that the last bus leaves at 6 PM.

The ride going to Pagudpud takes around 2 hours, but it seems like 4 hours to me because I forgot to pee before we left. Since our flight was delayed, we didn’t have time to eat lunch so all I had was some peanuts that we bought inside the bus.

There’s a Jollibee within walking distance from the bus terminal where you can relieve yourself and grab something to eat.

Whether you’re headed for Saud beach resorts or Kapuluan Vista Resort, the bus will drop you off the highway and you have to take a 10-15 minutes tricycle ride going to your destination. The fare is around Php 40 per tricycle (not per head).

Finally, at around 5 PM we arrived at Kapuluan Vista Resort hungry and weary. Mike, the owner, was there to greet us. It’s getting dark outside so we just grab an early dinner of their fine bagnet and headed straight to our room to get some rest.

FARE BREAKDOWN:

  • Jeep/Trike going to Laoag – Php40-50 per head
  • Ordinary bus going to Pagudpud – Php60 per head
  • Trike going to resort – Php40 per group

I’ll talk more about the place on the next part.

If you have any questions/suggestions/corrections, please feel free to leave a comment. Thanks!

thanks for dropping by my blog. back in college, we had a class that had an ilocos trip. we left thursday midnight and was supposed to go back sunday. one of the great & unforgettable/memorable experiences of my college life. we were supposed to go back sunday but our last stop was in baguio. my friends & i and our nffs (new found friends) decided to stay for another night in baguio and we had a blast.
going to ilocos was really wonderful.the old churches, the beaches, etc… too bad, pagudpud wasn’t popular then. now, i’m too busy with work to try and relax in pagudpud, which i heard was really wonderful. :)

yup ganda doon. gusto kong ulit bumalik sa pagudpud pagsummer. maganda talaga doon pag di maalon.

Hi, me and my friend are going to vigan-laoag-pagudpud this april.
magtatanong lang ako pare kung kaya ba naming tour ng whole day ang vigan including those museums then go back laoag to visit sta. monica church at lapaz sand dunes?

Isa pa pala, what’s the last trip of buses vigan-laoag, laoag-pagudpud?

hope you can response with this.. thanks

calvin: well kaya if you would start really early. kung mag-start ka sa vigan make sure by 2 PM max nasa bus ka na going to Laoag. You have the whole morning to tour vigan which is doable tapos get lunch then go to laoag which is a 2-hour travel. Then from there 30 minutes to sta. monica balikan then another 30 minutes to sand dunes. add ka na lang kung ilang minutes ka sa place na yun. importante si you get to sand dunes before sunset para sulit, wala kasing ilaw dun eh.

as for the bus vigan-laoag, alam ko meron sila sa gabi pero di ko alam kung till what time. 8 pm siguro. ask na lang sa tourist center doon. tapos laoag-pagudpud mga 4 or 5 pm ata last.

hi, my friends and i are going to pagudpud by march…we’ll be travelling by plane and we’ll hopefully reach laoag by past 7pm. the problem is, i dont know if there would be buses going to pagudpud during that time? and if meron nga ung trikes naman ang problema ko since cguro we’ll reach pagudpud by past 9 na. 24hrs ba ung trikes going sa resorts?
and by the way, im torn choosing between kapuluan or punta azul…which is nearer ba sa blue lagoon?

my other aternative naman regarding sa trip, is that upon arriving in laoag sa vigan na lang muna kame tutuloy and magtour till the next day before heading to pagudpud by afternoon…is it much convenient than my first plan?

your blog is sooo helpful for us na gustong magtravel sa ilocos tlga. the step-by-step instructions and tips you post is a two thumbs up for me! i super have lots of querries xe i really want the trip to be “perfect” haha

hope to hear from you soon. thanks much! :)

calvin: hi RL, thanks for the nice words. Hehehe. Ok, as far as I know hindi talaga bumibyahe ang mga buses to pagudpud sa gabi. so ok din to head straight to vigan and spend the night there. kung nagkataon na may fiesta at that time baka mas maganda pa gabi sa vigan.

anyway, why not stay at laoag, 2 hours travel pa to vigan so baka mapagod lang talaga kayo. tapos early in the morning kayo pumunta ng vigan, alis kayo mga 1 PM going back to laoag to catch the bus to pagudpud.

pero for sure, yung 2nd option lang kayo. besides, kakatakot ata magbus to pagudpud sa gabi due to lack of lights on some parts.

  5. rL says:

haha yun nga eh nakakatakot xe i’ve been there kaso me kotse…hindi xa applicable sa commuters by night.

i planned to push through with my 2nd plan xe mukhang less hassle xa and we’ll get to enjoy pagudpud sa afternoon. 2hours travel lang naman by bus going to vigan right? dederecho na cguro kame dun xe we’re aiming for an “i-low-cost trip” so scratch na ang overnyt sa laoag. =P HAHAHA

  6. rL says:

ei calvin isa pang quessie napagisip isip ko xe ung suggestion mo na magstay sa laoag for the night. marami bang places to stay near sa airport? yung affordable naman as in tamang matutulugan lang haha

nagsurf ako but i can’t find any helpful infos eh… puro fort ilocandia and tiffany’s ang suggested place..

    thanx much.

calvin: yung airport is parang nasa ibang town so ganun din pupunta ka pa rin ng laoag city proper to ride the bus going to pagudpud/vigan. wala akong masyadong nakitang mga places to stay dun sa town near the airport. mahal sa hotel, look for stay-ins sa city pero unfortunately wala akong alam na iba maliban sa balay da blas. hehehe dun kasi nag-stay lahat ng kaibigan namin na pumunta dun eh.

hi calvin.. npka helpful nitong blog.. hehehe…

here’s my story nmn.. me and bf are going to pagudpod via airplane feb12-15’09.. mga lunchtym kme sa laoag and real destination is sa saud beach pagudpod JCBC resort..pero gsto ko den mag camping sa blue lagoon bago don.. may mga cottages den ba sa blue lagoon?sabi mejo uncivilized area pa daw un tama ba un?pwede mag camping and.. gano ba kalapit ung Kapuluan Vista Resort na tinuluyan nyo sa blue lagoon.. ska how much per nyt ung cheapest nila?hehehe salamat..

    :)

calvin: hi hong. meron mga open cottages sa may parking area. pero wooden table and bench lang laman. pang kainan lang talaga. i think pwede naman magcamping doon magpitch ka lang ng tent. sa

kapuluan naman mga 10 minutes walk pa so medyo malayo in case may nakalimutan. P1600 binayad namin per night for a room pero mura yun kasi off-peak. baka sa february iba price.

pwede ka rin mag punta azul na mas bago and mas malapit sa blue lagoon. 5 minutes walk lang ata.

  8. bashtuse says:

actually, cool magcamping dun sa blue lagoon, super sarap kasi ng weather, i just came from pagudpud last december 28, 2008, wala ako masasabi sa place. SUPER GANDA! kaso lang for me mas mageenjoy ka if ul be taking ur car…why? kasi dami pedeng pasyalan dun (nagui windmills, burgos lighthouse, rock formations, etc.) pero super sulit! gastos ko lahat around 10k. i cook our own food kaya tipid.

calvin: hehe mahirap lang talaga magswimming dun pagdecember. either super lamig or maalon masyado ang water. pero yeah you need a car if you want to go to the windmills. ganda doon. pagcommute medyo hassle and matagal.

  9. bashtuse says:

sori bangui windmills yun…hehehe yung sa smart na ad with regine velasquez.. ganda dun.

calvin, wud u by any chance know kung gaano kalayo if we were to travel from pagudpud to sagada via cagayan?

calvin: syaks. sorry pero havent been to sagada or cagayan pa so i wouldn’t know.

  10. Ikchabod says:

Hi.. sobrang helpful naman ng blog mo.school break ng 3 gradeschool kids ko this coming july-august and we’re planning na umuwing pinas and magpuntang ilocos. just chanced upon your blog and sa tingin ko parang gusto namin i-pattern na lang ung aming itenirary dun sa travel nio.

question is, di ba you went there last 2007 pa? ung mga resort kaya are still pretty much the same? or at least ung place? in case pedeng paki-send naman ang contact numbers or kahit anong possible na recommended hotels mo?

thanks much and have a nice [more] travels!

    • Calvin says:

hi there. i think the resort is pretty much the same. kapuluan is well kept and there’s also punta azul (0905-266-2327 – Lanie Pedronan) which is newer and nearer to blue lagoon. as for laoag city i still highly recommend sammy’s balay da blas 09175702110.
