Bringing back the 80’s

I grew up during the 80’s when the air was much cleaner, the streets were less crowded and life was much simpler. I really love every bit of my childhood and somehow I feel sorry for today’s generation. There’s just too much distractions with today’s technology that it’s hard for a kid to grow up experiencing the kind of healthy fun we had when we were kids.
- I’ve experienced climbing up on a tree. These days, kids can only climb to the roof of cars or jeeps.
- We used to do a lot of writing before: snail mails, greeting cards, slum books. Now kids have e-mails, e-cards, text mesaging, friendster testimonials. I think in the future the writing pen would be obsolete.
After school, we used to play sipa, kickball, patintero or taguan until we’re called for dinner. Then go out again to play some more. Kids now head straight to internet shops to play online or network games. Or play with their PSP’s, Xboxes, PS3’s until past midnight.- How in the world did we live with only the local channels available? And it was fun back then since there were only a few channels, we all watch the same shows and talk about it the following day. Everybody were angry that Dragonball Z didn’t finish the series, we waited for so long only for them to start back on the first episode. Now people can’t live without cable. There’s too many cartoon channels to choose from.
- We used to drink plain water a lot before but how come we don’t get sick? Now every household needs mineral water.

- Instead of Magic or Pokemon cards, we were satisfied with our Trump cards.
- How come there are no prizes inside junk foods anymore? I think at one point I had all the possible prizes that came with Cheezels and Chikadees.
- I used to eat a lot of street foods. 10-cent fishballs, green mangoes, snowball and I never got sick. But now people are wary of the diseases you can contract from eating such foods. What changed?
- I don’t know if kids today still collect things. Maybe they do with stamps, coins, etc. But we used to have sticker books (Panini) back then and it was fun opening up packets and packets of sticker so you could get that second half of Panthro and Cheetara.
- Is the “tex” card game dead? How about RCPI telegram? Or what happened to Easy Call? Or those fragrant kisses you put in your pencil box? Do kids still buy or read Funny Komiks?
Oh I could go on but this is getting long. So why did I suddenly had flashbacks of my childhood? ‘Cause I found this gem of a site that brought me back to it. Nostalgia Manila has a collection of everything from TV shows, Sticker books, toys, etc., all from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Visit the site and bring back those fond childhood memories of yours. Get the message Easy Call.

Rainbow bright!!!
Apparently we’ve tried to scare ourselves into thinking that:
1-Tap water is evil and you die from it (apparently the 90s and the 80s were abberations).
2-Kids need constant computer stimuli or they will be left behind – forever. (apparently learning to use the MS Office sweet and internet can not wait until you’re in school.)
3-Everyone is scary. Kids should stay inside. (uhm….we played outside and no one that I know of was kidnapped.)
4-Children should be watched and scheduled every second of the day.
Crazy
-No more play dates…only play. Let boys be boys and girls be girls. Just let them play. Don’t put tv’s in bedrooms. And don’t put computers in bedrooms.
-Everything a kid can learn to be successful on a computer in school can’t be learned in under a month.
hehe thanks for the adding something to the list Emily. maybe because we have easier access to news (tv, internet, etc.) kaya naging mas-aware na tayo sa mga things that we weren’t aware of before. kaya mas takot mga tao ngayon.
