The future of books
eBook readers have been around for a quite a while. I used to read my favorite novels on my PDA but not many people find it appealing due to the small text area. Then came Amazon’s own eBook reader, Kindle, which is the same size as that of a medium sized-book but slimmer and lighter. What’s nice about Kindle is that you can also have top newspapers, magazines and blog content delivered to it wirelessly.
There are numerous advantages of using eBook Readers such as Kindle:
- You can quickly search for a specific text
- No need for physical bookmarks
- You can easily magnify the text
- There’s a built-in dictionary on it
- You don’t have to turn on a light just to read at night
I also heard that some big universities in the US are starting to publish textbooks in digital format. No need to lug around tons of books. It’s perfect for those who require a lot of textbooks such as medical and law students. Your backpack will probably contain just a laptop and an eBook reader. Oh how nice it is to go back to college with such cool technology these days.
Only thing keeping me from getting one is its price tag. Kindle is tagged at $360 which is kinda expensive for not-so-regular book readers such as me. Next on the ebook reader list would probably be Sony’s Reader Digital Book which is priced at only $300. Hmmm, I guess I’ll just wait till my PDA dies.
So I’m thinking that maybe paper-based books will be a thing of the past in the near future. Good for the trees?
