Growing mushrooms in a plastic bag

My sister has two hamster / guinea pig type of pets in her room. Before she left for a trip to Singapore, she cleaned their cage and replaced their wood shavings. She placed the old shavings in a plastic bag but forgot to put it outside for disposal.

Anyway after she left, while I was feeding her pets I noticed some white mushrooms growing in a plastic bag. It turns out that it was the bag were she placed the used shavings which also has hamster poop. Check it out:

Growing mushrooms

The one in the middle is not a mushroom but a used cotton bud

If I have to guess, I think those are Enoki mushrooms that are not yet fully grown (the tips are not yet flat). Based on a bit of research, the mushrooms live in dead tree trunks or sawdust medium. They have a long stem and are white in color since they try to reach out to a light source. My sister’s room is kinda dark by the way due to window blinds and the room is cool and moist because of rain the past few days.

So anyway, I cut the shrooms and had my wife add it to what she cooked for lunch. Hehehe. Just kidding. My wife was pretty much grossed out by it. For all I know, they may not be Enoki mushrooms but something inedible.

wow. do you think they’re edible? but then again, it’s weird kahit na edible siya because you know it came from somewhere with hamster poop. but they’re also kind of cool in a way.

well if they are enoki mushrooms then edible sila. and marami rin naman daw taong who grow mushrooms in controlled environment. pero tama ka, i won’t eat it kahit edible kasi nanggaling sya sa dumi. hehehe.

hmm they don’t look like enoki mushrooms to me. If you keep it long enough you might see a smurf community develop.

@noee, that’s what i was expecting. Hindi ba enoki? There’s another mushroom on a separate plastic na lumaki and nagspread ang tip although color black. Looked like the tip of a shiitake.

oh if you want to eat enoki mushroom, the simplest but tasty recipe for it is to saute it in oyster sauce. you can add other veggie in it if you want (for me, i add spinach or spring onion). it’s easy and yummy and healthy.
