A disheartening loss
There’s this company basketball tournament where I was chosen to lead a team. I was lucky to draft what I think is a winning team. We went undefeated all throughout the eliminations and semi-finals up to the first game of the best of three finals.
We lost a valuable big man at the end of that first game. Then we lost on the second game and finally got defeated on the final game. It’s quite disheartening since we know (and the other teams know) we are the better team.
Our hopes were high at the start of the game even if our backup center could not make it. Then it came crashing down late in the first half. One of our scoring guard got injured and limped back to the bench. To top it of, our opponent was able to score from the half-court as the buzzer sounded.
It was ok since we have another scoring guard to rely on. Unfortunately early in the third quarter, he got injured real bad could not play anymore even if he wants to. Then the other team scored three straight 3-pointers. That’s it. Our player’s morale dipped and we grew tired. We were easily defended due to the lack of options and eventually lost.
Even with the loss, I’m still proud of my team. They showed heart even when two of our best players got hurt in the game. I also have to give credit to the other team, they played really well and didn’t make lots of mistakes when it mattered.
I guess that’s what they call the breaks of the game. We could win it all if we’re healthy but when 3 experienced starters are out with injuries, all you can do is try your damn best. And they did. And because of that, they’re still champions in my book.
Something from Coach Carter:
"Well…not exactly your storybook ending huh…but you played like champions…you never gave up…and champions..they hold their heads high."

occasionally the upper dog deserves to win…with but few exceptions, it is always the underdog who wins through sheer willpower.
