Why do we need to fast before getting sedated?
I haven’t eaten a thing since for almost 20 hours now. I underwent an endoscopy procedure just this morning and had to go under general anesthesia. I was told not to eat anything 8 hours before the procedure.
Q: So why do we need to fast before undergoing any procedure that requires general anesthesia?
A: It’s because our stomach needs to be empty in the event we get nauseated during or after the procedure. If we have food in our stomach and vomit, it might lead to choking or we might inhale the food particles into our lungs.
It was the first for me to take a potent cocktail of Demerol, Dormicum and Benadryl and it knocked me out in just seconds. Hehehe, fast way to get to sleep.
Because of the endoscopy, they had me swallow some anesthesia to numb my throat. This made swallowing difficult even after the procedure so I can’t eat properly. Besides, the drugs made me dopey so I just slept when we got home.
So what did I do after I woke up? Blog! Hahaha. Now I’m really hungry but my sense of taste is still out.
Thanks to my wife for being very caring and patient to me this day. I’m kinda cranky when I’m really hungry.

My hubby had endoscopy also last 2004 because he vomits every after meal with really excruciating stomach ache. Apparently he had these ulcerations on his small intestines and you know what healed them? Ernie baron’s Lactobacilli ekek! He never had those problems eversince! Good job, Mang Ernie!
calvin: hahaha talaga? galing naman. Doctor didn’t found anything wrong with my stomach or intestines so we still don’t know why I easily get satiated or why I get stomach aches after a full meal.
