Nintendo DSi makes its debut today

The latest version of Nintendo’s handheld gaming device which is the DSi will be launched today in Japan. Why am I blogging about this? It’s because a couple of days ago my sister bought an older model, the DS Lite and I failed to inform her that the DSi is coming out soon. Hahaha. Sorry Kat!

Here’s what’s new from Nintendo DSi:
- It’s Slimmer. If the DS Lite is thin at 21.5mm, the DSi is much thinner at 18.9mm. It’s much ligher too by 4 grams.
- Bigger screen size. The DSi has a screen size of 3.25 in. compared to the DS Lite’s 3 in. screen.
- Built-in cameras. The DSi has a 3 megapixel camera outside and a 0.3 megapixel VGA camera on the inside. I don’t know if it would be of any use for a game though.
- SD Card Slot. They removed the GBA cartridge slot (DS cartridge slot is still there) from the DSi but added an SD card slot instead. It will hold the apps you can buy from the NDSi Shop. Similar to iPhone Apps perhaps?
- Own DS Web Browser. DS and DS Lite users have to rely on homebrew web browsers to surf the net but it’s a bit slow to respond. I hope the new DS web browser will be much better.
It’s would make a good gift this Christmas (not for me, still happy with my PSP) so wait for it to hit local stores. Or you can go to Japan and buy one for about $200 (¥18,900). Or much easier, get one from Model-gadget.com where they charge $272.99 for a unit excluding shipping fees. Comes in white and black in the mean time.

yup i knew about the dsi before i bought the ds lite. even though it has additional features, i think the ds lite works for me better since my purpose is to play games only.
calvin: i would still prefer slimmer and lighter DS even for just playing games.
the hackers are gonna have a field day with that sdhc card slot! enough reason for me to buy one in a couple of months!
calvin: hmm, would you know if they upgraded the processor?
there are actually contradicting reports with regards to the processor. some say that it is still an arm9 67MHz processor while others say that its been upped to 266MHz. im more inclined to believe that it is still the same 67MHz processor with a higher onboard RAM.
calvin: ahhh thanks thanks. not that much of upgrade in terms of power pala.
I got my Nintendo Dsi in black, but now I regret taking the black one.
calvin: what’s wrong with the black one?
The Nintendo DSi’s a great thing, but Nintendo should bring out more games for it…
calvin: yeah but I guess that goes for all handheld gaming (save for iphone maybe) like the PSP.
