How to turn off auto-correct in your iPod Touch
I’ve been using my iPod touch to check my blog for comments and reply to those when I’m on the go and it’s quite frustrating most of the times when my iPod auto-corrects my Tagalog comments. Even typing in “calv” will replace it to “calf”. Hehehe.
If you still don’t know, there’s a way to turn off the auto-correct feature of your iPhone or iPod Touch without jailbreaking it or installing any app. You just have to upgrade your firmware to version 2.2 (use the latest version of iTunes to upgrade) to enable the toggling of the auto-correct feature. Prepare for a huge download of about 200+ MB.

Before and after the firmware upgrade to 2.2
Where you’re done updating, go to Settings > General > Keyboard and you should see the additional option to turn off/on the auto-correct feature. Now texting or e-mailing would be easier without the pesky auto-correct.
