How to read PDF’s on your iPod Touch
Before, I talked about how you can read eBook’s on your iPod Touch with Stanza. This includes text-based PDF’s. You would notice however, that Stanza cannot support image-based PDF’s which is commonly used for digital magazines.
To read PDF magazines on your iPod Touch, you need a different app. A FREE app that could read PDF’s is Discover. Just like Stanza, your desktop and iPod Touch should also be on a wireless network.
With Discover though, you don’t need any desktop client. Your file explorer or internet browser can communicate with your iPod Touch to upload or download files.
There’s still a current limitation with Discover. It seems that bigger PDF’s (more than 20MB) is more likely to crash the app. I think it has something to do with the memory of the device.
Follow these easy steps to start reading PDF’s on your iPod Touch/iPhone:
1. Make sure that your device is connected to your wireless network.
2. Start Discover and take note of the IP address given to you. Click the green circle if it doesn’t appear.

3. On your desktop, open your browser and go to that IP address. In my case, it’s http://192.168.0.148:8888. Your browser should load Discover’s File Management page.
Here you can upload, download or delete files. You can also create and manage your folders.
4. Select a folder where you want to upload your PDF file. I’m going to select Public.
5. Click the Add Files and select the file/s you want to put in your device.
6. When done, click Upload All and wait for the upload to finish.

If you have multiple iPod Touch / iPhone in the same network, you can also share files between devices.
7. Head back to your iPod Touch to check your PDF.

And enjoy your PDF… if it doesn’t crash on you that is.

There are still some flaw with Discover as you would experience the occasional crashing. It just means that the PDF is too big or poorly made. Let’s just wait for an update from them or until a more stable PDF viewer becomes available.
You can check Discover’s forum for known issues and possible support if you’re experiencing any problems.

Thanks a bunch for posting this!
I have so many PDFs to read and it’s such a waste of paper for me to print them out cause I end up throwing them out in the end anyways.
i’m find your site very helpful!
keep up the good job!
maraming salamat!
pdf uploads successful! thanks calvin
but am using a gen3, it doesnt work. are there any options for gen3 to read digital magazines?
it should work. maybe you miss something? Ana is also using 3rd gen ipod touch and she got it to work.
ah, sori, I found the problem. My pdf file is TOO big, like 55MB.
Does it require wifi every time we want to read a file?
nope. wifi is only required for transferring.
Well I just bought an iPod 2nd Gen 8 Gb.
Whenever I enter the “http://192.1…”
my firefox and chrome browser is saying that the page is takin too long to respond.
any help please??
sometimes it does that. make sure you are connected to the network your PC is on and not to other networks and that discover app is open.
do I have to mess around w/ any o Discover Settings? (like add services part? there one can input: IP Address, Port, Username and password)…
Not sure if you still need any help, and I realize that you posted this a while ago, but I just got the app, and I had the same problem.
I kept trying to open the page up in Firefox, but it would not work.
Finally, I tried Internet Explorer (8, I think), and it works like a charm…
Hope that help you, or anyone else…..
well i’m pretty sure the settings r all set. I’m in a secured wireless so iPod is picking up the same signal too…i’m getting the same error. I am opening up the Discover in my iPod and entering the http://192.1.2:etc. exactly as it gave me. i’m getting the same “connection timed out” error. I guess i’ll reinstall Discover directly to my iPod instead of syncing it w/ my laptop. i’ll let u know if that helps.
okay i think i found the problem..my wifi setting didn’t hv the “proxy” setting turned on from my iPod..that prolly was the case.
nice. thanks for sharing that fix!
Hi Calvin, do you know Aji reader? it works pretty much as Discover, except it can read big files. I found it through appstore. now it’s on promotion so it’s free. guess you may want to have a try.
Nope. Not much of a PDF reader these days but the last time I tried Discover I was able to read 20MB files and up without any problems. thanks for the heads up though! will try it out.
