How does the “Wild Card” Round work in American Idol?

In season 8 of American Idol, they re-introduced the “Wild Card” round. In this round, contestants who didn’t make it to the Top 3 of their group during the semi-finals are still given the chance to advance.

The “Wild Card” episode is going to be shown on the third week of the semi-finals the day after the 3rd live results show. So on our third week, we’ll have 3 days of American Idol.

Wild Card

According to executive producer Ken Warwick (announced last December), the “Wild Card” episode will probably have 9 or 10 slots (I’m guessing it’s gonna be 12). Those who will occupy the slots are the next top vote-getters from each group so we’re assured that Anoop Desai will be on that episode.

UPDATE: The judges were the ones who decided who will be included in the Wild Card round and they only chose 8. So who made it?

No text votes and no new songs

One major difference for the “Wild Card” Round is that the 3 finalists who will advance will be determined by the judges and not the audience. Word from American Idol is that the producers want to pick up the pace and give the judges more control going into the Final 12.

“Wild Card” contestants will also be singing the same song they did during their semi-final round. Although this sucks for the audience, it makes sense because those who will be coming from the 3rd group won’t have enough time to prepare.

UPDATE: AI gave the Wild Card contestants the choice to sing a different song.

Is it realy the same song? If it is, what will happen to those people who have chosen the wrong song on their previous performances? Does it mean less chances for them to make it through? Because their going to sing again those “bad-choice” songs..I’m really wonderin’ will it work..
    anyway thanks fo the infos..

calvin: sad to say they’re just gonna be doing the same song. unfortunately for those who chose the wrong song to begin with but I’m sure they were informed on how it works.

I wonder if group three ends up being two guys and a girl. Will the wild card have to be three girls to balance things out. Or are we not doing 6 girls and six guys. Also I have a question how does the online voting work. When you vote over the phone you have a limited time tor respond, but on vote for american idol online you could still be voting all day Wednesday and all day Thursday. So, do the online votes count and if so how do they make it fair.

calvin: i don’t think they’re gonna balance the number of girls and guys. it won’t be fair since there are clearly more better male performers than females this season.

where did you get info about online voting? as far as I know, AI doesn’t allow it. They didn’t do it in previous seasons so there’s no sense in doing it now. only way to vote is via call or text.

This is really disappointing. They should of waited til next week and let 12 wild cards perform all new songs and then let the public vote.

calvin: well they created the wild card round for those who aren’t that popular but are really good such as rick braddy. but i agree they should’ve allowed them to perform new songs since some of the favorites chose really bad songs.
