Smallest whale shark in history rescued in Sorsogon
Last March 7 in a town near Donsol, Sorsogon, a tiny whale shark that has its tail tied on a rope and being peddled by a hawker was rescued and released by government officials.
This whale shark was the smallest one ever recorded in history measuring up to only 38cm (15 inches) which was far from the usual 9-14 metres it can grow to. This led to researchers thinking that the Philippine waters might be a birthing place for this gentle giants. Considering that this is the first time a baby whale shark has been recorded, people really don’t know much about the birthing habits of the whale shark.
Having personally seen a big version up close, the discovery of that tiny one is fascinating to me. Good thing they were able to free the fish.
