The Wrestler movie review
I decided to watch this movie after learning that Mickey Rourke won the Best Actor in this year’s Golden Globe. He was also nominated for Best Actor in the Oscar’s but Sean Penn won it.
The Wrestler tells the story of Randy “The Ram” Robinson (Rourke), a washed-up professional wrestler who reminds me of Shawn Michaels or Ric Flair. Old and beaten down, The Ram can still captivate the audience and his fans.
The first part of the movie shows a realistic behind-the-scenes look in the world of a professional wrestler. How they talk about the moves they will do during a fight and other tricks of the trade. We all know that this type of wrestling is fake but you can see how real the wrestlers prepare and endure the beatings during a match.
The second half delves more into the character of The Ram after he almost died of a heart attack. Trying to make ends meet after learning that he can’t wrestle any more. Patching things up with his estranged daughter (Rachel Wood) and forming a kindred bond with his stripper friend (Marissa Tomei).
This movie is a well-written, well-portrayed and well-directed character-driven story that got me engaged all throughout. Although being a fan of wrestling helped a bit at the start. Marissa Tomei was great on this film and all those piercings and tattoos all over her body helped make her believable. But this movie belongs to Mickey Rourke.
Rourke’s role as Randy Robinson clearly fits him and he did an excellent job executing it. You can really see the emotions in his eyes that makes his performance so truthful and honest. I can’t imagine other actors playing the role after what Rourke did.
Mickey Rourke deserved to win Best Actor at the Globe for his work on this movie. He should’ve won it at the Oscars as well.
Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars. It’s a drama that is also raw and gritty at times but if you can connect with Rourke on this one, you would surely love it after watching. It’s not for everybody but it worked for me.
Does this post look like I’m having a man-crush on Rourke? Hehehe.
