My Google Page Rank went down
Google did one if its Page Rank updates recently and I noticed that mine went down by 1. Having a PR3 for quite a long time, it’s now PR2. This update also affected my Pinoy Web Surfer site which went down to PR2 as well.
For those of you who don’t know what Page Rank is for, in the most simplest terms, it’s how Google ranks your site on it’s search results page. High PR is good as it will most likely land you on the first page when a certain search keyword is used.
So what affects a site’s Page Rank?
1. Doing paid posts
Some advertisers pay you to post about a site or a product with links pointing to them. Google hates this and can penalize your site if found out.
I don’t do that here in Calvin’s Hub anymore so I don’t think that caused my PR to drop.
2. Link exchange
Yeah, unfortunately it’s against Google webmaster’s terms of service to exchange links with a number of sites to trick the search engine into ranking your site higher. You see plenty of incoming links are good for a site but if Google finds out that most of it are “reciprocal links”, your site will be penalized.
I have lots of natural incoming links but I also do have “reciprocal links”. In fact, I added a few this past months so maybe that’s the reason. I’ll have to delete links to outdated sites and stop adding more links if my PR doesn’t improve on the next update.
3. Web sites on the same niche
Well your site can’t simply be the one-stop place to get info on a particular topic. Other sites will continue to improve their SEO so you can’t stop with yours if you already have a high page rank.
Oh well…
Anyhow, can’t do much about it. I really still can’t understand how exactly Google PR is calculated so I’ll just continue with what I’m doing. Write posts that interests me or posts that can be informative to lots of people.
Just enjoy blogging. Don’t worry much about page ranks unless you really want to earn from your site.

thanks for the headsup about pagerank.. just learned mine as well.
calvin: kamusta naman yung sayo?
what? i really don’t get it how they compute the PR. Dati nagresearch research pa ko about the formula they use etc but too much stuff to think about kaya pinabayaan ko na lang. pero hello, ang labo naman bat bumaba rank mo. i know you have a lot of readers sa AI posts mo diba? sayang. dibale tataas din yan
calvin: hehe basta di nagdwidwindle yung mga readers ko and nakikita pa rin ako sa google ok lang ‘to.
Ano ba ang reciprocal links?
calvin: yung link exchange and blogroll. those are reciprocal links. if you would notice mga popular blogs dont have such things. or kung meron man, minimal lang and quality links (high PR) pa.
Aw! Don’t worry, I’m sure your blog still ranks well in Google. I know another blogger who had been in PR0 for a very long time but his blog still ranks well in Google’s search results.
It can a link exchange problem.. you might be linking out to a blog that had gone bad. Oh well.
I saw a number of sites that don’t actually cater to a niche but are still performing well in Google’s search results.
hmmm… in all honesty, di ko alam ang tungkol sa mga page ranks.
I am still trying to figure out a way to let my site earn money… siguro kelangan ko pa matutunan kung pano. heheh.
calvin: naku marami pang kelangan matutunan bago kumita ng pera. usually nagsisimula mga tao sa paid posts talaga.
Thanks for sharing. I just wrote an article on why your site rank could have dropped in Google and I just realized by reading your post that I forgot to mention that another reason is that other people may have outranked you through their own SEO efforts!
Very good point there!
BTW, I made a trackback to your post too.
calvin: thanks Nic. appreciate it.
dont worry, sabi nga ni gem, althought bumagsak PR mo, it doesn’t mean bagsak ka ren sa search engine
it’s really a different thing
Hay, I stopped caring about my continuous flunking out of PR! My main blog’s still at 0, despite debuting at PR2. Tapos my older blog which was at PR4, zero na rin yata. But, I refuse to take it personally na lang. If earning well through my blogs is not for me, so be it. Haha
calvin: yeah hehe wag mo na natin pansinin yung PR na yan. pagtumaas na lang hehehe.
