How North Park Kopi Tiam ruined our Mother’s Day lunch

kopitiam So how did you celebrate Mother’s Day? For our Mother’s Day, we joined my wife’s family for a simple lunch out for some Chinese food. This post is a rant on how North Park Kop Tiam spoiled our lunch.

Actually, we really want to dine in Man Hann but after learning that the branch in Wilson had already closed, we thought of going to North Park instead. We ended up in North Park Kopi Tiam in Benito St. in Horseshoe Village, QC.

Storm here I come!!

On this hot Sunday, I thought of their cold dessert, Storm, which I really wanted to try. When we got to the place, we saw this banner saying that mother’s who dine in on May 10 (which is today) will get a surprise treat which is great because my wife’s grandma is also with us.

So far so good.

Early birds

We knew that places like this tend to get full during Sundays so we arrived early at around 11:30AM and there were only 2 groups of patrons inside with one already eating. Yay!

After a few minutes of arriving, we began ordering our food but asked for our California Maki to be served first.

Surely in a matter of minutes, the maki arrived. Followed by our drinks. Then the crowd started to pour in. We thought we’re really lucky because we’re already eating while some are still waiting to be seated.

So how did it ruined our lunch you may ask. Relax.

Started going downhill

After a bit of waiting, they served our soup which was poorly presented. The platter it came with was full of spilled soup. There were huge chunks of egg whites which did not properly dissolved. Maybe they’re getting frantic in the kitchen.

Salted fish fried rice came next. Not good. I didn’t see any salted fish bits on it. What’s worst, nothing followed afterwards.

The rice was already cold when the King Dao spare ribs arrived. They didn’t care much with the presentation any more. The spare ribs looked bland and bare but we devoured it anyhow from waiting too long.

Melted ice

You know the service is really bad when not even midway through your meal because of waiting, the ice  in your iced tea has already melted and it’s getting warm.

After a lot of follow ups and going to the cashier to complain, our other food arrived. But… they informed us that they weren’t able to input our order of Lechon Macau and offered no real suggestion on what to do about it. Aarrgh.

Onto the food, there were no garnish in the sweet and sour pork. I thought bell peppers were mandatory here. The fried noodles taste ok though. Some shrimps in the Yang Chow fried rice looks undercooked (still a bit grayish).

Appetite lost

StormBasically, after that we just lost our appetite anymore. The food doesn’t look appetizing. Our rice was already cold. Our drinks already warm. My mom was furious with the staff. We just finished up quickly and paid our bill which had an excess order by the way.

Sigh. I didn’t even bother to order that Storm any more.

So you may be asking, what was the surprise treat that they have for mothers? I don’t know, I didn’t bother to ask. Maybe a chockfull of headache? Oh yeah, the rice used in the maki is not sticky so it disperses easilly.

Terrible experience really. Bad service. Food’s not that great as well. I’d rather eat at Man Hann.

Too bad you didn’t get to enjoy mother’s day and it got ruined for you and your party.

Hope the evening went well though. You could have still had a mother’s night celebration instead. :-)
