How to jailbreak your iPod Touch with 3.0 firmware

The long (err short) wait is finally over. The iPhone Dev-Team did a great job in releasing a working jailbreak for the iPod Touch and iPhone.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to jailbreak your iPod Touch with the 3.0 firmware using redsn0w 0.71 for Windows. First, the things that you need:

You can still restore your files, notes, music and videos from backup after upgrading and jailbreaking 3.0. However, it seems that my app data such as e-Books for Stanza and files for Discover did not make the restore.

While downloading, I suggest you backup your iPod as well. Open iTunes and sync.

Finished downloading? Great, let’s start!

Restore your iPod with the original 3.0 firmware

In iTunes, Press and hold SHIFT then click Restore. Look for the original 3.0 firmware that you just downloaded.

This will take a few minutes so go ahead a grab a snack or something. After it’s done, you just successfully upgraded your iPod into 3.0. Don’t restore from backup yet.

Time to jailbreak

1. Start redsn0w and Browse for your original 3.0 firmware, the huge file you downloaded. It will process the file for a few seconds.

2. Once successfully identified, Click Next. It will start to prepare the jailbreak data.

3. Make sure Cydia is checked and click Next.

4. Power off your iPod (press power button for a few seconds until you can power it off) and plug it into your PC. Click Next.

5. Get ready to go into DFU mode. Just follow the onscreen instructions. Don’t be too conscious with the timing, they put allowances on the timer.

6. Once in DFU mode, it will automatically start jailbreaking your iPod. After a short while, you will see in your iPod that it is Downloading  Jailbreak Data. Wait for a few minutes (mine lasted 5 minutes) for it to finish.

To check if you’re successful, fire up your iPod and go to the second page to check if Cydia is present. I suggest you open Cydia and do the necessary upgrades for it.

Restoring your iPod from backup

Before you restore, if you have cracked games previously installed, you need to add AppSync for OS 3.0. This is the equivalent of miPatch in 2.21 to upload .ipa files into your iPod. Read this guide on how to install from Cydia.

Open iTunes again and go to your device to restore from backup then do a sync.

You should be able to see all your apps, songs, videos and photos intact. Try playing a music and shake your iPod to shuffle to a new song.

For themes, you have to download Winterboard from Cydia (click Featured Packages, Winterboard is near the bottom of the page) again as well as the themes.

Enjoy your Jailbroken iPod Touch with 3.0!
