Upgrade your iPod Touch to 3.0 for FREE

If you want to upgrade the firmware of your iPod Touch or iPhone to 3.0 but don’t have a credit card to pay the $9.95 associated with it, you can do so for free.

iPod Touch Software Update

Here are a couple of things that you should know before you do it:

  • This is not a custom firmware. It’s the original so if your iPod is jailbroken, it will unjailbreak it. No Cydia, no themes, etc.
  • If you want to jailbreak it, you can check out my guide here.

You also need to upgrade your iTunes to 8.2 for this to work without a hitch.

If you decided to push through, locate the 3.0 firmware for your device here. Download and extract the .ipsw file.

To install:

  1. Connect your device and open iTunes 8.2
  2. Sync to backup your iPod
  3. Press Shift and hold it then click the Update button
  4. Browse for your .ipsw file and select it
  5. Wait 10-15 minutes and you’re done.

Enjoy the new features of your iPod Touch!

Sorry for the lack of screenshots. I’m still waiting for the jailbreak to do this. Updating is really simple and straightforward anyway.

Would the update still work if i have a newer version of itunes? for example, version 9.1?

    • Calvin says:

I heard that some people are having trouble with 9.1. if you can avoid updating to 9.1 then stick with the old version first. it doesn’t hurt to try though. if you need the installer for the old versions look for it in oldapps.com

Will synching my itouch with the 3.0 software clear everything on it? and how do I extract the .ipsw file? I have a mac.

    • Calvin says:

If you update to new firmware it wont. If you choose restore to new firmware it will. You can restore from backup afterwards anyway.
