Fix for “itunesminiplayer.dll failed to register”
Recenly, a lot of people are encountering the “itunesminiplayer.dll failed to register” problem with their iTunes.
It seems that this is connected with AVG AntiVirus giving false positive with the file saying that it’s a small.bog Trojan virus and either quarantines it or deletes it.
Apple assures us that there’s no trojan or any virus on its iTunes installer.
Here are a couple of tips on how to solve the problem, both requiring an iTunes reinstall:
- Remove AVG and use other anti-virus instead before re-installing iTunes. I’m using Avast now.
- If you’re in love with your AVG, you can add iTunes to its exceptions.
- Open Resident Shield
- Click Manage Exceptions
- Then add C:\Program Files\iTunes (or wherever you installed iTunes) to it

Actually, you can avoid the reinstall if you can restore the file from quarantine after adding iTunes’ install path to the exception rule.
This issue has been raised with Apple and is also being thoroughly discussed in their forum. No word yet on AVG’s side but expect another round of update to fix this problem.
