Had our house treated for termites

So we had this termite infestation on our cabinet a few days ago. We thought we could do this on our own than call the expert which could cost a lot and will turn your house upside down. We just have to buy some termite spray, powder and that’s it.

Thick wood colonized by termites That’s a mistake.

If you haven’t had any form of professional termite control done inside your home and saw infestations, I suggest you save some money to get their services.

You would want a thorough check-up the first time around and don’t want to be opening every wooden cabinets inside your house discovering roaches, ants and spiders.

So we asked this termite expert to check our house and give us a quote on how much it will cost to exterminate them termites and keep them away.

Full treatment or just indoors?

If you don’t have the budget, there’s the indoor treatment.

What they do is check all wooden parts of your house. They will open all cabinets and check for termite infestations. If there are termites, they will drill holes around the area and spray termicide in it so the wood will absorb them. This will kill termites and prevent them from going back.

Ask if they can use odorless chemicals so you can watch over the workers while your house is being treated.

However, if they find that the wood is already dead meaning termites have really taken control over it. You have no choice but to have them take down that wood to kill the termites.

Kill those termites

Kill those termites!!

If there are no termites found, they will just spray at the edges of the wood (usually near the floor) to scare termites away.

Plan the sequence of the areas to be treated especially if your house is small. It will take around 4 hours for the chemical to dry up before you could put your stuff back.

Near electrical outlets or wirings, they won’t spray but put borate powder around the area. This works for most insects including roaches. The insect will become sick and infect others when it goes back to its nest and infect others.

Chemicals used lasts only around 4-6 months so you better have experts come back to do another check-up. If you’re lucky, termites will stay away from your home and go to your neighbor instead. Hehe.

The cost for indoor treatment will depend on how much chemical is needed to treat your home and the man-hours it will take for the labor. We got quoted Php3,000 on our 2-bedroom single-storey place.

For the full treatment, they will also drill holes on the soil or cement around your house and pump the soil with termicide. This will kill any termite colony underneath your house and would protect the soil for about a year or two.

termites dying

Lots of termites in this dead wood.

The cost for soil treatment depends on the area of your house because of the amount of chemical to be used. The price they gave us was P110 per square meter. We are still contemplating whether to get the soil treatment or not because it’s quite expensive.

What to expect during termite treatment?

  • Expect a lot of dust so wear a mask
  • Expect a lot of moving stuff  around. Clothes, food, pots and pans must be removed from the spray area.
  • Expect a lot of junk to be found and thrown away
  • Expect roaches and other crawling insects escaping the harmful spray
  • Expect muddied floors especially if infestation is worse

These termites destroyed some of my wife's stuff

Good thing we had our home checked up instead of doing things by ourselves. They found three separate infestations including a 5-star termite hotel in our house.

Keep in mind that without soil treatment, you need to have them do another check-up on your house after three to four months. Check-up is usually free anyway.

When all is finished, we discovered a lot of empty spaces on our home, lots of clothes and shoes to donate and lots of things to be given away. Treat yourself to a spa after all the hardwork.
