Globe Tattoo experience in Pasay City
A month ago I was given a Globe Tattoo prepaid kit which was good because I don’t have to keep borrowing broadband USB’s when going on a trip. It is just recently that I’ve opened it and do some testing on its speed.

If you’ve been following my blog, you would know that I had some bad experience using Globe Visibility. This Globe Tattoo is supposed to be an upgrade from the Visibility kit so I was a bit hopeful on its performance. I’m hoping that I could reach the advertised 2 Mbps burst speed.
Testing
To test this Globe Tattoo, I will be doing a bandwidth test via Speedtest, video streaming, torrent downloading and browser downloading.

I’m in the Pasay area by the way near Pasay General Hospital. I did my test Saturday morning around 9 AM and I was able to get a full HSDPA signal quite easily:
Speed Test
I did the customary speed test (via speedtest.net) making sure that no other resources are taking up bandwidth.

Based on the results, the download speed is decent (although not that great) while the upload speed is slow. It’s a teeny bit faster than my 384kBps DSL connection.
Browser Download
Next up is downloading a huge file from a browser (Chrome).

I was able to sustain around 40-45 kB/s speed but it did shoot up to 57 kB/s every once in a while. It also dipped down to the 20 kB/s range and stayed their for a while.
The HSDPA connection dropped for a few seconds though so I wasn’t able to finish the download. Hehe.
Torrent Download
I use uTorrent for downloading torrent files. I chose a torrent file that has thousands of seeders to maximize my bandwidth.

I’m getting a maximum sustained speed of 53 kB/s only. But I wonder if there’s a tweak that I can do to speed it up some more. Anyone know? I already set my download speed to Unlimited.
Video Streaming
Based on my Speedtest result, I wouldn’t expect much from video streaming. I watched some YouTube vids and I had to buffer things up first.
Off-peak usage
I also tried using Globe Tattoo after midnight, 1 AM to be precise, hoping I could achieve that 2 Mbps speed when using it during off-peak hours.

It was pretty bad because the HSDPA connection keeps dropping like twice every minute. I couldn’t finish doing a speed test and I couldn’t even download a non-resume 3MB document from my browser.
Verdict
Globe Tattoo Prepaid Kit for me here in our place in Pasay City is a decent backup connection in case our main DSL goes down. It’s good for casual browsing, e-mail and social networking but don’t expect stutter-free video streaming with its speed.
It’s bad for downloading especially files that doesn’t allow resuming. Downloading torrent files is ok but expect to wait for a long time.
Of course the result in different area may differ. I heard some people who are getting sustained download speeds of 200 Kb/s especially during off-peak. Although some people are getting dial-up speeds in their place.

I would just like to comment that in the Fairview area, Globe Tattoo (postpaid) is slower than a dial-up connection (as during this post, for instance), and can get only up to HSDPA, which is rare, at its fastest.
Right now, at 7kbps (DL) and .53kbps (UL).
It may be understandable because of the weather, but having a constant connection of almost near-dial-up almost at every use, and at various times of the day and night, is almost regretful. I know that my bandwidth is shared with the mobile users, but Globe should be able to provide a decent solution to go with its products.
Either Globe add more base stations in our area, or revise its coverage and speed advertisement.
yeah… or go with Sun if you’re only using it within metro manila. i heard they have good speeds in the metro.
I did a test for Sun Broadband at http://chopsueyrice.blogspot.com/ and get a result of 2.20 mbps!
