How to distinguish an iPod Touch 2G from an iPod Touch 3G
When Apple released the 3rd generation of iPod Touch, they didn’t really change anything physically from the 2nd generation. We expected a camera but all they did was upgrade the hardware inside and added voice control.
So how can you tell if somebody claims that they’re selling you a 3rd-gen iPod Touch? Here’s the easiest way.
Look at the engraving at the back. Observe:

The 32GB badge of the iPod Touch 2G is slightly bigger than the 3G. Aside from that, it’s not really clear from the picture but there are 4 lines of text under the 32GB badge for the iPod Touch 2G whereas there are only 2 lines of text for the 3G.
If for example your friend won’t allow you to remove the casing so you can check the engraving, here’s the next best thing. General Settings.
It clearly says in the About section that the device is an iPod Touch 3G.
Well those are the two easiest way to know if an iPod Touch is 2G or 3G. There are a lot more differences between the two and they are exhaustively detailed here.
