How to partition your hard drive without reformatting
Why do people want or need to partition their hard drive? The basic reason would be is that they can separate system files from their data files. So in case you need to reformat your hard drive due to virus or OS upgrade, you can safely do so without losing your data files.

When I got my sister’s new laptop, I found out that its 500GB hard drive doesn’t have any partitions. I don’t want to reformat it because reinstalling the OS takes long so I opt to partition it without reformatting.
Did you know that its possible and quite easy to partition your drive without reformatting? I used this free tool called Partition Wizard Home Edition and it worked like a charm. Here’s a guide to show you how easy it is to do.
Just so you know, I installed a whole lot of programs before doing this to check if it will really preserve it during partitioning.
1. Open your Partition Wizard and select the drive you want to split. In my case it’s my lone drive C:

2. Select Move/Resize Partition.

3. In the new window, specify on how you want to resize your drive. You can drag the slider or input a partition size. In my case, I want my drive C to be 150GB. Click Ok.

4. Back at the main screen, you will see an unallocated partition. Select that.

5. Then click Create Partition.

6. Name your partition. I’m going to name mine “Data”. Then specify the size you want the partition to be. I’m going to allocate the rest of space into my Data drive but you can choose to split it into multiple partitions. Click Ok.

7. Almost there. When everything’s in order, click Apply.

8. You may or may not get this message but it’s ok. Just click Restart Now.

At this point, your PC will restart and will start the partition process without booting to Windows. It might take a while depending your disk space so just wait it out.

That’s it! When your machine boots the next time, you will see your newly created partition. Check your system files and configuration to see if everything’s a miss. Mine’s all intact so Partition Wizard went perfectly for me.

Ang galing! I’ve always wondered if I can do that. Can this work kaya if you want to repartition an already partitioned HD? I want to do that for this office laptop.
yup pwede rin yun. although backup mo na rin muna just in case.
maganda ito ah…madownload nga at matry….thnx
After I ran the program and made the necessary tweaks (resized Drive C, created new partition in new space, labelled it “DATA”, apply, then restart), the pc rebooted and started the partition… last i saw was 61%. Nalingat lang ako konti pagbalik ko wala nang nasa display, pero mukang umaandar naman (processor light blinking). Yun lang, how do I know if it’s still running. Specs: Sony Vaio VGN series laptop, dual-core, 1gb ram, Vista. Nothing in the display at all, as in nothing. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please?
baka nag-sleep lang yung monitor? hehehe. sorry for the late reply pero ano na nangyari?
tagumpay! kaso i made a mistake in partitioning, nagawa ko drive C 70g, drive D 150g. gusto ko drive C 110g, drive D 110g. how can i restore and amend my previous partition? thanks
pwede pa rin ata. Just adjust the chunk displaying your drive c and d.
Do I need to back up my files?
“you can safely do so without losing your data files.”
