Quick way to jailbreak your iPod Touch with 3.1 firmware
UPDATE: There’s a 3.1.2 firmware jailbreak already so doing this will be pointless. Do the 3.1.2 instead.
The iPhone Dev-Team released their PwnageTool that allows you to jailbreak 3.1 firmware for your iPod Touch 1G and 2G. However, you need a Mac OS X system to do the jailbreak.
For Windows users like me, there’s a much easier way to jailbreak your iPod Touch to 3.1 firmware. But first, do note of the following restrictions:
- This DOES NOT work with iPod Touch 3G. Basically, if your iPod originally comes with 3.1 firmware, you have to wait for a real jailbreak.
- For iPod Touch 1G and 2G: This only works if you’re currently on 3.0 firmware. It doesn’t matter if it’s jailbroken or not. To downgrade/upgrade to 3.0, do the first part of this guide.
What you need:
- iTunes 9 or higher
- 3.1 CFW (Custom Firmware) for your iPod Touch version. Here’s link for 1G and here’s for 2G. These CFW’s were created using the PwnageTool.
Here’s how you upgrade your iPod Touch to a jailbroken 3.1 firmware:
1. Open iTunes and go to your device page
2. Click Shift + Restore then look for the 3.1 CFW you just downloaded.

Wait for the restore to finish and that’s it!
Do note that this will remove all your apps, songs, videos, etc. so be sure to back up your data first then just re-sync afterwards.
I still haven’t performed this jailbreak because I’m waiting for a file explorer that is compatible with iTunes 9 so I could back up my YouTube vids but I know a lot of people who were able to jailbreak their iPod to 3.1 with this simple method.
Of course there are a some people out there waiting for an official tool like redsn0w. Actually, there’s a tool from hacker George Hotz that can jailbreak all iPod Touch and iPhone that will come out real soon.

what?! another firmware? kaka-upgrade ko lang e…awww…
calvin: mas mabilis daw response ng 3.1 and mas tumatagal daw maubos battery. may leak ata kasi yung 3.0 kaya mabilis maubos batt compared to 2.2.1
Thanks Calvin! I referred to your guide when I updated to 3.0 and was waiting for this.
Is this process the same?

hi rom, that requires the use of Pwnage which only works with Mac. This is the condensed version for PC which is much simpler and doesn’t require you to go to DFU mode. This guide skipped to step 10 of that link.
I tried downgrading from 3.1.1 to 3.0 to install this modified ipsw, but it shows an error message.
Anyway, I think I’ll just wait for the final firmware where everything is solid. (Just wanted to arrange apps)
Thanks Calvin!
yeah it seems that some people are having trouble downgrading to 3.0. buti ako hindi pa naka 3.1.
hintay lang siguro ng greenpoison for touch 2G.
I was able to downgrade to 3.0 again via DFU. Syncing again my backup (and highscores eheh) The original 3.1.1 installs fine but not the modified version.
This looks sooo much simpler than jailbreaking to 3.0!
And I have DFU phobia already!
huhuhu ayaw to gumana sa ipod touch ng bro ko. i didn’t know na merong ipod touch 3G?? kasi matagal na ata to binili ng bro ko ung iPod Touch nya, inupdate lang nya sa 3.1.
so hindi pala sya ipod touch 3G. gagana yan pag di 3G. just downgrade to 3.0 then upgrade to jailbroken 3.1. basta make sure you have the correct firmwares kasi hindi interchangeable sa 1G and 2G ang firmware.
Yup, may volume buttons siya sa gilid. I’ve tried it, but to no avail (I’ve tried, original firmwares 2.2.1, 3.0 and 3.1), kasi un dating alam ko na jailbreak, ung 2.2.1 — so un ung inuna ko gawin ’round 2 days ago.
I’m going to ask my bro how he updated his iPod touch. kasi ung sa friend ko, 2G din and na-jailbreak ko easily, using ur method.
ahhh. sige let me know na lang kung anong fix ginawa mo kung napagana mo. lam ko simple lang talaga mag restore to original firmware eh.
yep, i will. as of now nabalik ko lang cya sa 3.1 original firmware.
Hi Calvin!
I JBed my ipod to 3.1, whats weird is I have both Cydia & Icy now.
I like Cydia better but everytime I delete (using cydelete) Icy, it keeps on coming back like dandruff!
How do I remove it permanently, it seems to be ‘built in’ with the JB you posted?
There’s no harm done with having both Cydia & Icy right?
Thanks!
nope but i suggest removing icy still. look for cydelete in Cydia and that will allow you to delete Cydia-installed apps just like regular apps. link for info.
Hi Calv!
Yeah, I did download CyDelete and delete ICY accordingly but whenever I load a new theme, ICY keeps on ‘re-installing’ itself..
calvin: talaga? hehe should stick to one theme at a time siguro. hindi ko pa rin ma-jailbreak sa akin. ill do it over the weekend.
safe ba toh?? just like you said, hindi mo pa nattry ung jailbreak (posted above)..
i would suggest go straight with the 3.1.2 jailbreak.
