500 Days of Summer movie review
“It is not a love story… but a story about love.”
When I heard that from someone about 500 Days of Summer, I got intrigued on how it differs from other romantic films. After getting some good praises about this movie from friends in Facebook, my wife and I were able to watch it just last weekend… and we liked it!
500 Days of Summer started as a boy meets girl story. Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt of GI Joe) is an ordinary guy working at a greeting card company where he meets who he thinks is his soul mate, Summer (Zooey Deschanel). The problem is that Summer grew up not believing in love but that didn’t stop Tom from pursuing her.
Sounds pretty typical right? But you will be surprised to find something about unique about this film. You will cheer for Tom for being your pretty average guy who’s in love. You will hate Summer for hurting Tom. You will love Tom’s kid sister, Rachel (Chloe Moretz), who he often turns to for advice.
What separates this from other love films is that it’s very innocent in such a way that these things could actually happen to anyone. I just love the way that is was written.
The acting was superb especially JGL, the dialogues, the songs (watch out The Smiths fans), and the unique way their story is told. Oh and the musical scene was a nice touch and that trip to IKEA. The pacing is just right and the movie will leave you with a smile at the end.
Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars. I won’t fault you if you’re going to include this to your list of favorite movies in your social network profile.
