Rotating brownouts to hit Luzon for a month
Yikes! Just heard from the news that starting this Monday (Feb. 15), there will be 2 to 3-hour rotating brownouts in Luzon that will last for a month. This is similar to what happened in Rizal and nearby areas on October last year.
According to utility economics manager of Meralco, Lawrence S. Fernandez, these 2 to 3-hour brownouts will happen twice a day.
This rolling brownout is due to the critical level of power supply in the Luzon grid. The Malampaya power facility has a scheduled preventive maintenance until March 11 but the Malaya plant is expected to make up for the loss of power. However, the Malaya plant is almost out of fuel when it compensated the capacity loss when the Sual plant was on shutdown last January.
I’m on the lookout for the rotating brownout schedule but Meralco hasn’t released one yet. I’ll post it here when I find it.
This is really a bad time for brown outs when the weather outside is extremely hot. Moreso for households like us who rely on electricity to use water. I guess we’ll be staying at the office which has a generator for a bit longer if the schedule on our area is not favorable for us.
This is something to keep in mind if you’re booking for a place to stay in Luzon in the near future. Time to dust off those gen-sets you’ve used during the brownouts of the Cory era, if they’re still working that is.

I smell something fishy. Why now when the elections are just weeks away? This doesn’t bode well for an automated computerized “electronic” elections.
well if hanggang march lang ito then hindi naman siguro ma-affect elections. unless it will affect the testing of the machines.
