You can really feel the summer heat right now with temperature reaching record levels. I’m thinking of upgrading the air conditioner in our room to a more energy-efficient one. We still have the old type of air conditioner where half of the body protrudes outside the house dripping water. Hehehe. I’m thinking of something not the window type but split type and one that is smart to know when to turn itself off or go on standby when a certain temperature is met.

Here are some tips on how to choose for the right air conditioner.

• Consider cost-efficiency. Today with technology getting advanced, it’s not as simple as choosing the cheapest air conditioner. You should consider those that can achieve the cooling capacity the fastest and with a high Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER). This would result to lower power consumption which will translate to lower electricity bill.
• Care about noise level. Noise and vibration usually comes from the compressor, the water formed at heat exchangers, and the blower. A noisy unit typically means poor craftsmanship and is not suitable for bedrooms.
• Look for those with durable heat exchanger. The most delicate part of an aircon is its condenser which is the most vulnerable to corrosion and rust. Keep rust away from it by choosing those with “Gold Fin” coated louver fins. This coating consists of anti-corrosion paint, hydrophilic coating, resin, and chromate that allow maximum heat exchange performance while extending the life span of your aircon.

That’s it. Of course, split type air conditioners doesn’t come cheap ranging from Php25k to Php40k. Ouch! Have fun hunting for a new air conditioner.
