Do we really need dental chewing gums?

You’ve been regularly brushing your teeth and using mouthwash at least twice a day and visiting your dentist twice a year for cleaning… the question is, do you still need those dental health gums? chewing gum

I’m not talking about your ordinary peppermint gums like Doublemint, but those sugarless chewing gums with a sweetener called Xylitol. Gums like Orbit, Spry, Mentos, Trident, etc.

Most of you know that after eating, there’s always a high probability that crumbs of food will get stuck on your teeth or in-between them. These food provides energy for bacteria found in your mouth which in turn produce acid that causes dental caries or what’s commonly known as cavities (I just want to sound like an expert, hehe).

Anyway, back to gums. Chewing gums after meals is quite beneficial because it stimulates the production of saliva  to wash away and neutralize the acid produced by bacteria in plaque. However, if a chewing gum contain sugar, you need to chew it for at least 15 minutes to wash away the sugar residue it will produce.

There are chewing gums however that have a natural sweetener called Xylitol. This sweetener helps prevent cavities by drying up the sticky plaque from the bacteria thereby halting its acid-production. I know it sounds far-fetched but that’s how it works.

Lots of Lotte Xylitol gums

So going back to the question? Do you really need Xylitol gums or brushing teeth and regular dental check-up is enough? Maybe? I don’t know but I have a lot of this Lotte gums with Xylitol so I might as well consume them.

Need? Not need but it can be used as something extra just like mouthrinse. As long as you have good oral hygiene and regular dental checkup, you can prevent tooth problems.

pero if a person only brushes his teeth in the morning and evening, ok itong dental gum diba? tsaka marami kasi akong nakuhang xylitol kaya di na muna ako magtootoothbrush hanggang sa di pa ubos. :P

I’ve using the Spry Dental Defense System for years now and have had great results with it. Saliva that contains xylitol in is also more alkaline than without which helps correct enamel. On top of all those great benefits its all natural! So my family and I are a ‘Xylitol Family.’
