Dodgeball is the new Ultimate
I think in the near future, the game Dodgeball will be the new Ultimate (Frisbee). I remembered playing Ultimate almost a decade ago and it was a loads of fun. For a different sport that will probably be a hit in the near future, try Dodgeball.

Our local version of the game that kids used to play is “Tamaan Tao” but for a more organized play with rules and all, it’s called Dodgeball. It’s been making its way into college campuses for the past year just like Ultimate did before and I was able to play a couple of games a couple of weeks ago.
A bunch of media friends were invited by Lenovo (who’s promoting the sport by the way) to play Dodgeball with celebrities, college kids and Lenovo partners. Here’s how a particular game goes (grabbed the photos from DaddyJoey).

There must 6 people on each team and six balls (weighs like a volleyball) lined up at the center at the start. 3 on the left and 3 on the right.

At the start of the set, three people from each group can make their way to the center to grab the three balls on one side.

You must move back a couple of feet (there’s a line) before you can make your first throw. This is to give slower people a chance to move back before getting thrown at. Yeah we were slow and getting hammered from the get-go. Hahaha.

Once the game is underway, you can go as near as the center line to throw balls although you will most likely get hit if there are still a lot of opponents.

When you get hit, you’re out. If you cross the outside line while dodging, you’re out. If you cross the center line, you’re out. If you threw a ball and it gets caught, you’re out.

If you catch a ball, the first teammate who got out comes back in. So it’s not just hitting people but making catches as well. And throwing fast low balls to avoid having it caught.
It’s hard to play on sand because you can’t run that quick but it’s less prone to scratches and bruises. Usually, the game is played on grass and seldom indoors.

It was tiring but fun. My right arm was sore for a few days afterwards. It was our first time to play the game as opposed to our opponents who even have team uniforms so do the math on who won.
Gotta hand it to Lenovo for helping promote the game. If you want to join a pick-up game or learn how to play or know all the rules, check out DodgeBallPhilippines.org and contact them for practice schedules.
Head to DaddyJoey for more photos of the event. Thanks man!
