Enjoying the new HTC HD Mini
One of the nice things in being a tech blogger is that you get to go to gadget launch events. During HTC’s launch of their Legend, HD Mini and Smart, I was lucky to have won one of the raffle prizes. I just got the phone yesterday and I’m now enjoying using it. Here are my first impressions on using the HTC HD Mini.
The HD Mini is a smaller version of the HD2. It’s thicker than a naked iPhone which makes it easy to hold and the slight rubbery finish is already like a casing on its own. All you need is a screen protector.

The 320 x 480 HVGA display is kinda small for watching videos but the resolution is gorgeous. The colors are crisp and beautiful especially with HTC’s UI.
It runs on Windows Mobile 6.5 which is a letdown for some but for a first time smartphone user like me, I can’t find anything really wrong with it right off the bat.
The interface is easy to navigate with and the response is quick despite the 600MHz processor. There’s haptic feedback too. The groovy HTC Sense UI does a great job masking the WinMo UI. I just love the Weather widget and all its animations.

One thing I found out if it’s your first time to own a smartphone is to turn off auto-updates for your Mail, Twitter, Facebook, Weather, Stocks, etc. Unless you want to see exorbitant fees on your next phone bill.
Threaded text messages, e-mail messages looks good with the HTC Sense. Not quite when viewing it in Windows Mobile mode.

The 5mp camera takes decent widescreen photos. Video recording mode works well for on-the-spot video too.
Coming from an iPod Touch user, I’m quite disappointed with the browser (Opera and IE) on the HD Mini. Likewise with the Windows Media Player which doesn’t look as slick as iPods own video player. It had trouble playing my AVI videos compared to when I was using the Samsung Omnia HD. The WinMo Facebook App is bad compared to the iPhone version.
I’m sure there are a lot of alternative apps out there which I have to try out first. Skyfire as my browser so I can also watch streaming videos from websites. CorePlayer for my Divx videos. I’m also going to try SportyPal as my GPS/Pedometer that I can use during my runs.
So am I happy with the phone? You bet! I still haven’t dwell into flashing roms and installing apps which I’m going to try soon.
