Why I won’t upgrade my iPod Touch to iOS4 just yet

Now I’m glad that I haven’t upgraded my iPod Touch to iOS4 yet. Even though there’s a jailbreak for the iOS4 released earlier today, there seems to be a huge issue with battery life once upgraded.IOS4batteryissueThere’s 20 pages worth of complaints from iPod Touch users who upgraded to iOS4. It seems that battery drains faster than in the old firmware. People are complaining about sleeping with a close to full charge iPod and waking up with the battery almost drained.

Some say the problem is in the WiFi which is still working during standby. Turning it off completely doesn’t seem to help though. Besides, what good is an iPod if you can’t quickly check your mail or Facebook?

I don’t think it has something to do with iOS4′s multitasking feature since iPod Touch 2G users are also experiencing the problem.

Some say turning the Airplane Mode On fixes the problem but in theory that should consume more battery. Others say Bluetooth, Push Notification and Location services should be switched off to fix this battery issue.

If the above solutions still don’t work, others recommend doing a complete restore (not from backup) of your device. You would lose your settings and app data but it might just fix your battery problem.

Oh and another thing, there are also reports that the battery heats up very fast when charging as compared to previous firmware versions. This will seriously degrade your battery very quickly.

However, some people did not experience this problem after upgrading. But I think I would hold on to my 3.1.2 firmware until iOS4.01 is released and if it would fix the battery issue. I also suggest you wait as well.

Bad Apple. Any iOS4 users out there experiencing any problems after upgrading?

So far I’m happy with the improvements, but I do notice the quick battery drain. But then again, its so hard to tell because even with the previous versions battery has always been an issue. Also I notice that the battery bar rises up a bit after a “rest”. I’m hoping they can fix this with the next update.

ahh maybe pagheavy user ka hindi mo mapansin. ako kasi mga 2 hours a day max lang eh so pagstandby mode baka laging drained. pero dami pa rin kelangan ifix sa ios4. yung display ng battery and wifi din daw.

yes, i have a ipod touch 3g 32gb and i distinctly notice the fast drain of battery.
even the speaker volume turned atrocious.
calvin, i wanted an advice, i have been recently experiencing shocks from ipod touch when connected to my hpdv9704tx notebook which is powered.
even the USB cable gives shocks.
my notebook has been giving shocks since long but an apple usb, is this not wierd??.
i am in india and the women at the repair center was very rude to me as if i was lying. she refused to accept that it can shock.although she took the cable in the end for testing yesterday.
so what do you think isnt the cable faulty?
or is it just the notebook?
    if you want to check
please fully charge your ipod and while keeping it connected swipe at the metal part just below the home screen.after two three swipes a distictive shock is expereinced i have tried this on three ipods.all on ios4.0.
please confirm whether it happens in your touch or not?

sure I’ll go check it out when i get home. wanna know too if it’s an ipod touch issue or an ios4 issue. by shocks you mean static right?

      • Manjot says:

i am actually more concerned about the usb, which is supposed to give a 5v output, giving shocks even prior to connecting to the ipod. of course the charge gets leaked somewhere and exceeds the permissible limit of current allowed to flow.that charge flows through me. so, it is static indeed.
i dont think it’s an OS 4 issue.
i want you to check coz
if it happens in all the ipods i can relax.
and of course make sure you are not wearing any footwear, although i sometimes get shocks even with footwear.

hi manjot, didn’t get any shock on my end. i tried rubbing/swiping the bottom edge of my ipod after a full charge with and without the usb cable attached. i was also barefoot when i tried it.

There’s no airplane mode on the iPod touch because it has no cellular radio. It’s an iPod and not the iPhone. =)

And switching your iPhone (or any phone for that matter) to airplane (or flight) mode would definitely save you power. Doing so would switch off the cellular radio of the phone, thus, conserving battery power.
