5 things you should know before buying the Samsung Wave
Posted on August 29th, 2010 by Calvin
The Samsung Wave is Samsung’s first smartphone that runs on their very own bada OS. It’s a sub-Php20k smartphone which is pretty cheap for a 1GHz device that has an awesome display. But should that convince you to get it as your next phone?

Here are five things I discovered about the Samsung Wave after using it for about a week that I hope would help you decide.
- The gorgeous Super AMOLED display is the first thing you would notice. The display is very striking and gives vibrant and crisp colors. Good for gaming or watching videos. Only the Samsung Galaxy S has the same type of display as of this writing.
- I like the design and build of the Samsung Wave. Looks elegant and not cheap like other phones from Sammy. It’s a bit slippery though.
- Samsung puts really good cameras on their high-end phones including the Wave. After using the not-so decent camera of the HTC Wildfire, I’m impressed with the camera of the Wave. It has built-in flash too!
- You can get a 2GB or 8GB version of the Samsung Wave. This makes a great phone for capturing precious moments in video. Takes very good videos by the way. Oh and you can easily watch downloaded movies on this phone without bothering to convert.
- bada OS is a fairly new mobile OS. In terms of usability, there are things that I wish it can do easily. The widgets are very limited and poorly designed and there aren’t a lot of apps available yet.
So there you have it. If you’re not after a polished smartphone experience, then the Samsung Wave is a very good option for just under Php20,000. Right now, it’s a really good feature phone that has the capability to turn into a formidable smartphone in the future.

I’m very interested in this phone, but a “must” for me is an office suite or any equivalent. Is that downloadable for this phone?
there’s no default viewer for office files but i think there are downloadable apps like picsel office. haven’t tried it yet though.
Samsung Wave looks cool, but would be better if it runs Android OS instead of bada.
yeah. magkakaroon din yan siguro. samsung pa.
Hi Commenters, i have a few hands on pics and videos on my site.

I also have some few take aways from my experience with the phone.
Enjoy
Had mine for about 2 weeks now. So far, its all good (well, I’m easily pleased, coming from a Nokia 1661 lol). From my knowledge, the firmware available here in the philippines is seriously lacking. I just want my 720p videos to playback 100% smooth and it seems even with the latest update that just came out in Kies, this hasn’t been addressed (slight stutters in some videos. This doesn’t seem to be an issue with the Euro firmwares out). Plus, we need paid apps in our store now. I believe there’s a picsel office suite available as a paid app for viewing and editing that doesn’t have any of the limitations that’s in our current picsel document viewer. I’d seriously pay for that once paid apps come.
Other than that, I’m very happy with the phone ^^. I bought it for its multimedia features and it’s definitely doing its job. Plus the screen is just amazing.
thanks for sharing that geo. yeah firmware is a pain. birthpains when it comes to new OS. but you’re right, as a multimedia device/phone, it’s really great!
@Geo
Thanks for the feedback. I also want to know if the phone allows group contacts, group sms and syncing with Outlook. I find those features very useful in my job. Thanks.
Not sure if this answers your question but the phone allows you to create groups for contacts in your phonebook. Then, when sending sms messages, you have the option of selecting those groups to send sms messages to.
About Outlook, I don’t use that but I believe its doable with Samsung’s own Kies software for the phone.
hmm im not sure ha pero dun sa my accounts, there’s an exchange activesync option there where you use your e-mail and it will pull details from tasks and contacts. i used it for my gmail account but i think pwede rin from an outlook’s exchange server yan.
This is my phone right now.
this is a good phone the only thing that i don’t like is the battery life are not good. / i think there is a memory leak problem. cause there are times that i can’t launch any apps because it is saying that there is no enough memory palringo is not a good IM application.
na experience ko rin yung battery problem. nagdrain sya kahit hindi ko ginagamit. in-off ko wifi bago matulog and i think that helped… i think.
badtrip ang battery life kala ko nun una my problem sa battery but when they change it ganon pa din.. but overall im satisfied with it.. battery lang talaga
Samsung Wave owner here for 2 months. Totally love the phone, I’m not so much of an appwhore but so far Samsung and some developers have came up with a few decent apps.
And yes you’re right, it’s more of a glorified feature phone so far, since Samsung really hasn’t perfected it as a powerhouse smartphone. But to those potential buyers out there, let me just remind you the phone and the OS is still in it’s infancy. It’s a first gen device so it’s understandable that it has a lot of shortcomings for now, just remember how the iphone or the android started?
Screen is totally amazing! Oh and btw, it’s a proven fact, battery life gets better and better. It really does improve after a couple of weeks so it’s no biggie. All in all this phone can easily be described as “bang for the buck”.
thanks for sharing your experience with the Wave Gar. Appreciate it!
Samsung wave is one of the best phone in this price range.
It has exceedeed every expectations.
