Hipstamatic / Instagram alternatives for Android

The iPod Touch doesn’t have a good camera but still a lot of people are using it thanks to apps such as the Hipstamatic and Instagram that makes taking photos on a crappy camera fun and shareable.

So why can’t Android phones join in the fun as well? There are many Android phones around and most have cameras that would not make you proud to whip out to take photos. Unfortunately for Android users, Hipstamatic and Instagram still can’t find their way into the Android universe.

However, there are still some worthy Hipstamatic/Instagram alternatives for Android users.

1. FXCamera

FXCamera

Perhaps the most popular camera app for the Android. FXCamera lets you take photos and add some effects such as: ToyCam, Polandroid, Fisheye,  SymmetriCam and Warhol. It’s not much but this 2MB app is very easy to use and can be stored in your microSD. [Link]

2. Retroid

Retroid

This one is a fairly new app and still has bugs when you use it to actually shoot your photos. What you can use it for is post-processing. Take pictures normally and then use Retroid to apply some retro effect. At the moment, there are only 5 retro effects to choose from but the way they are applied looks really nice and the original image is retained. Be warned that this app cannot be installed on your SD at the moment. [Link]

3. Vignette

Vignette

Small app that has tons of effects. 68 Effects and 56 Frames for a demo app! With retro and vintage effects, lomo effects, tilt-shift, photo booth and a whole lot more. Sweet! The limitation? It can only take photos with a maximum size of 2 MB and doesn’t save the original version. Shouldn’t be a problem for most people. It has App2SD too! [Link]

4. PicPlz

PicPlz

Another photo-effect app with a few filters to work with. What PicPlz have is integration with quite a number of social networking sites including Posterous, Tumblr, Twitter, Flickr and even FourSquare. It will inherit your phone’s native camera features such as zoom, white balance, ISO etc. Processing is quick and it even saves the original photo. You can even add location to your photos. Effects include: Russian Toy Camera, The 70s, Little Plastic Lens, Trip to the Optometrist and others. App2SD is supported too! [Link]

5. Little Photo

Don’t let the name fool you. This little app (1 MB) packs quite a lot of features. When I say lots, you will get 60 effects/filters that you can play with.  What’s nice here is that you can stack effects atop one another . Also, you can do some post-processing on your photo like adding text, burn, dodge, etc. which might take a toll if you’re using a cheap Android phone. [Link] *Thanks to the people who suggester this.*

With these photo effects apps for the Android, you won’t feel left out when friends upload their Hipstamatic or Instagram creations left and right with their iPhone or iPod Touch. You too can join in the fun with your small Android phone that could. These apps are FREE by the way!
