And just like that, the book has been closed on the Pacquiao – Marquez rivalry. In their 4th career match against each other, Manny Pacquiao went down face down on the canvas with 1 second remaining in the sixth round after walking into a “perfect punch” from Juan Manuel Marquez.
JMM was setting Pacquiao up all throughout their match because that’s what he is, a counterpuncher. Pacman got a bit careless in the sixth after landing a flurry of punches to put him on top but Marquez only needs a little opening to throw a looping overhand right that squished the face of Pacquiao and knocked him out cold, for about a minute.
It was not a “lucky punch”. Even Roach acknowledged the fact that it was a phenomenal punch from Marquez. “He set us up well. I was a little surprised he could pull that off as hurt as he was, but he pulled it off.”
Pacquiao needed smelling salts to revive and the customary post-fight hospital check-up yielded negative results so all is well for our champ.
“To all my fans, I would like to thank you for your prayers and assure you that I am fine. I am looking forward to a nice rest and then I will be back to fight.”, said the People’s Champ. I don’t think Jinkee will approve on that last statement.
Anyway, it was eerily odd to see Pacquiao planking inside the boxing ring. He’s the guy we thought couldn’t be knocked out that way after stellar performances for the past how many years. It was his first time to be knocked since 1999.
“I never expected that punch,” Pacquaio said in a post-fight interview. “I got hit by a punch I didn’t see.”
“I want to congratulate Juan Manuel. I have no excuses. It was a good fight and he deserved the victory. I think boxing fans who watched us were winners too.”
That’s good sportsmanship and indeed it was one helluva fight. Way better than his past matches that is. JMM knocked him down in the third with a right hand. Pacquiao got back at him on the fifth, even bloodied his face in the process. He was winning the sixth round until that last second miscalculation on his part that sealed the win for Marquez.
Now with Marquez showing the world that Pacquiao can be defeated decisively, I hope Mayweather Jr. won’t be scared anymore to give the fans the “Fight” that everyone is waiting for.
Congrats to Juan Manuel Marquez for showing the world what he’s made of in this decisive win against another champion.
